We are proud of our performance, and challenge our competitors to provide similar data on their performance. Once you see an apples to apples comparison, you’ll have the data you need to make intelligent investing choices.

Before we show you the performance charts, please read the following disclosure and give your consent at the bottom of the page. This lets you know what exactly is being presented, and how all the data was computed.

Performance Disclosure:

Total Asset Performance subscribes to the Nobel Prize-winning concept of Modern Portfolio Theory (MPT).  MPT seeks to optimize performance through diversification within both domestic and foreign asset classes. MPT quantifies risk as defined by Sigma/ Standard Deviation and reward as defined by percent return. 
Total Asset Performance (TAP) offers portfolios consisting of no-load mutual funds. This style of management is commonly referred to as a "fund of funds" approach.  There are no individual securities in our recommended portfolios.

We use Captools Portfolio management sof1tware to calculate our performance numbers and MPT statistics.  We have included all portfolios above $10,000 and which have 1) been fully invested with all of our portfolio recommendations and 2) have owned those recommendations throughout the performance period.

The performance graphs displayed compare the return in percent (y axis) against the risk in sigma / standard deviation (x axis).  We use data that has been averaged across all portfolios that were not excluded due to the perviously mentioned rationale.  We use a mathematical average derived from the combination of all eligible portfolios, not the average of the individual risk categories.  All returns are displayed NET of ADVISORY FEES. Average returns include all portfolios, across all six available risk categories. Our returns include capital gains (long & short) reinvested as well as dividends reinvested.  The S&P 500 we display as a benchmark does not include dividends reinvested.  Our reporting periods assume an investment made on the first trading day of the year and valued as of the last trading day of each year; but not liquidated.  Further, we compile all risk data individually from each portfolio and then coalate this data to average.  Therefore, we feel it is the purest measure of performance, which is our ambition.  The MPT performance graph (x,y) displays the portfolio Sigma / Standard Deviation and its percent return.  The return is displayed on the vertical axis in percent gain.  The risk is displayed on the horizontal axis.  The scales of each graph is adjusted to clearly display the difference between TAP portfolio performance and the benchmark S&P 500.

S&P BENCHMARKING

The S&P 500 was chosen as a benchmark due to its proximity to the Managed Portfolio's risk as measured by historical standard deviations as well as its familiarity with the public.  The S&P 500 is an unmanaged index and not available without a commission or fee.  The S&P 500, by definition, invests only in domestic Large Capital companies, whereas the Model Portfolio seeks diversification both: 1) through investing in companies of different capitalizations (Small- or Mid-Caps) and  2) through investing in Foreign companies.  Both of these strategies are essential components of Modern Portfolio Theory.
